Pyramids at Giza & The Sphinx
I had always imagined that the Great Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx were out in the middle of the dessert. In fact, they are located just an hour or so outside of Greater Cairo. The pyramids were built by three different pharaohs starting at about 2,500 B.C.
The Sphinx, the world’s largest monumental sculpture, is believed to have been built in the third millennium B.C. All of the treasures contained by temples and tombs and that escaped looting by various European conquerors are displayed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo which we also visited.
